Left and Right brain dominance

On the blog
they discussed the fact of left and right brain operation....the dancer in the pic above is animated, and spins either left or right, depending upon whether you are right or left brain dominant. As intersting as the idea of dominance is, I use both halves of my brain when I fight...assigning proper tasks to whichever side is most appropriate at the time, quite consiously!
With meditation before and after every single class, I have found this to be quite easy, and it has improved my fighting considerably...or perhaps better to say, it has improved my adaptability to cope with changing circumstances, both on and off the field.
No great hairy assed mystery here...anybody can do this, and should. It isn't unleashing the beast or anything like that, and has nothing to do with concious-unconscious minds so beloved of psycho-therapists and hypnotists. Perhaps it is merely putting names to processes which people have been doing for years. However, hundreds of man hours have devoted to discovering the use of what amounts to two separate brains in one body and why it is so.
I suspect a good self understanding of this situation in your own mind would result in great benefits.

LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS

uses logic

detail oriented

facts rule

words and language

present and past

math and science

can comprehend

knowing

acknowledges

order/pattern perception

knows object namer

eality based

forms strategies

practical

safe

RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS

uses feeling

“big picture” oriented

imagination rules

symbols and images

present and future

philosophy & religioncan

“get it” (i.e. meaning)

believes

appreciates

spatial perception

knows object function

fantasy based

presents possibilities

impetuous

risk taking

I have suspected that the observed phenomon of people talking to themselves is a manifestation of the two parts of the same brain working together to create a single mind.

Very interesting! I am a mixture of the two sides. I am very reality based, like things safe, logic and facts rule, etc. But I am also very much a ‘big picture’ person and am terrible at math and strategy. According to this, I am more right brained. But I don’t really understand what’s going on here.... the dancer IS turning clockwise, is she not? I don’t see how you could perceive her to be turning counter clockwise, even when I try to force my brain to see it.

If is possible add the CresceNet(www.provedorcrescenet.com) in your blogroll, I thank. Good bye friend.

You might try covering one eye, then the other. Because of my continually moving from right hand to left handedness (which is NOT natural btw) she spins counterclockwise as soon as I cover my left eye.

Personally I don't think that the important point is what direction she is spinning, rather, whether you can get her to change direction when you cover one eye.

To catch a person lying, you ask them a few test questions that you know the answers to "what is your name, where do you live" to see which direction their eyes move. It changes depending upon brain dominance. The application is then which direction do the eyes move when they are making the story up. That direction is normally different than the test questions... The fact that you have to ask the test questions proves that different people have different parts of their brain being used for common tasks, and it is convenient to call it "right brain or left brain dominance".

Note that left handed-ness is not even addressed in this article, yet it is pretty fundamentally important!

Sorry my earlier comment had a typo.

She still goes clockwise. I must be 100% completely, woefully right brained! See I always thought people who looked off to the left were lying, cause I heard a police investigator say that once. But it makes sense that the direction would depend on whether you were left or right brained. Fascinating.

Then there is the concept of left and right handedness of the body, which may or may not involve left and right handedness when you write. In most people, the right lung has three lobes, and the left lung has two lobes, with a heart taking up space where the central lobe should be. The liver is on the right, the appendix is in its usual spot, the right testicle is lower than the left, the right breast is larger than the left. In a certain percentage of people, this is totally reversed...the liver is on the left, the heart is on the right, and so forth. In this case, the right and left brain would also be reversed, and the the right brain would function like a normal left hemisphere, and so forth.
This might be important if you need an appendix removed, or if you get into a car accident, but generally it makes no never mind. It is a medical curiosity that provides exceptions to any rule about right and left brain functions.

This is most interesting, though I'm not sure where it leaves me.
Firstly, when I look at the figure you present here ... I am so extremely convinced that I'm looking at the back of a woman ... I can practically see a crack in her rear - I have now tried this several times and when I cover my right eye, she appears to be spinning counter clockwise with her leg toward ME, or in back of her. When I cover my left eye, I'm still seeing the back of a woman with her leg drawn in back of her, but she's spinning so clockwise it's incredible.

Love this ... very interesting. Thanks for the treat.

Re: your theory of people talking to themselves - have you ever read the book The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind by by Princeton University psychologist Julian Jaynes?

No, but I think I just might!
